I recently attended the ACRL workshop entitled “Being a Successful Librarian In the 21st Century” in Norman on November 19th. The committee and board members of the ACRL organized an informative session. The speakers were very informative and the topics presented were current and applicable for today’s librarian. Sarah J. Johnson kicked off the workshop with her presentation, “How to Get the Job You Want.” She highlighted areas of notice for librarians when searching the job market and other tips such as interviewing skills. After a short break, Pricilla Schontz kept the momentum going by speaking on “How to Keep Your Career on Track.” Her presentation focused on networking, mentoring, interpersonal and leadership skills, and publishing. Reconvening after a delicious lunch, the attendees chose breakout sessions for the day. Sarah J. Johnson opened discussions up for “Marketing Yourself Online” while Sharon Saulmon presented “Being a Proactive Mentor.” The next breakout sessions included Dr. Rhonda Taylor presenting “Recruitment and Continuing Education” and Tom Rink and Brad Robinson discussing “Alternate Career Paths in Librarianship.” As a new librarian just entering the job market, I found the workshop to be a very rewarding experience and look forward to other informative sessions offered by the ACRL.
