UrbanTulsa.com - New Adult Literacy Tutor Training

UrbanTulsa.com - Article: "NEW ADULT LITERACY TUTOR TRAINING--Tulsa City-County Librarys Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service recently completed a 12-month pilot project designed to improve services for adult learners participating in the local literacy program. The literacy program helped field test new tutor training models and techniques in an effort to update the training provided to volunteer tutors.

Fourteen local literacy programs participated in the Oklahoma Department of Libraries Open Minds project designed to update literacy techniques and training first developed more than 60 years ago.

The project, funded by grants from the Dollar General Foundation, the Krueger Foundation, and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries is wrapping up year one goals and objectives and plans to expand to five additional sites in the new fiscal year.

The Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service provides basic literacy instructions to adults seeking to improve their reading abilities. According to the census, it is estimated that 15 percent of adults in Tulsa County are functionally illiterate. This means these individuals meet significant obstacles in their daily lives due to low reading and writing abilities.
