Banned books flies off shelves

I had the honor of meeting Chris Crutcher back in 1986, a very nice man and a good author, probably why I find this story so interesting. It's taking place in Michigan, but will Oklahoma feel the effects?

Banned books flies off shelves: "Author Chris Crutcher is banned temporarily from Grand Rapids Public Schools, but at local libraries, his book 'Athletic Shorts' is flying off shelves.

'I haven't had a chance to re-read it because all our copies are checked out,' said Mary Robinson, young adult librarian at Herrick District Library in Holland.
...
In fact, all 44 copies in the eight-county book-sharing network covered by the Lakeland Library Cooperative were spoken for Saturday, with more people waiting.

The 1989 book hadn't been a hot read until a Grand Rapids teacher got into hot water recently for reading the short story "Telephone Man" to her middle-school class.

The tale is about a mentally handicapped boy who imitates his father in using racial slurs. But when black students rescue him one day, he comes to realize his father's racist views are wrong.

The teacher last week was reassigned, and the book is off the shelves in the district while administrators review it. "
