McAlester News Capital & Democrat| Living in the past even easier; digital comes to library

McAlester News Capital & Democrat| Living in the past even easier; digital comes to library: "Local historians, genealogists and others interested in the early days of the McAlester area will find that the much dreaded task of pouring over rolls of microfilm has just been made easier.

No longer will you be required to spend your time looking at an old fashioned microfilm reader. You won't have to wait your turn to strain your eyes and back, looking for particular pieces of McAlester's history.

The McAlester Public Library wants to set you free.

The Southeastern Library System of Oklahoma has purchased a new digital microfilm reader for the McAlester Public Library. The machine gives the library the capability to convert microfilm into a form that is computer readable such as CD-ROM's.

Reference Librarian Christopher Elliot has been working for weeks to convert the library's old newspapers from microfilm to CD-ROM.

'It is really fun to look at these old papers as I scan them,' Elliot said. 'I really enjoy looking at the old ads.

'One thing I was amazed by is the number of millinery stores that there were,' he said, referring to the many hat stores that used to dot downtown McAlester. 'I guess everybody wore hats back then. They were very popular. Lots of ads were for them.'"
