NewsOK.com | Library to give literacy training for mothers: "Mothers on public assistance in Pottawatomie County who read below the sixth-grade level will soon be able to get literacy training through the library.
The Pioneer Library System board recently approved an $82,923 contract to operate a literacy program in Pottawatomie County for women receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
Library system Executive Director Mary Sherman said system personnel have a lot of experience providing literacy training over the years.
This will be the first time the Pottawatomie County Literacy Program has ever operated a literacy program for temporary assistance recipients, Sherman said.
Anne Masters, the library system's associate director for system services, said the yearlong contract is with the state Libraries Department. The contract was arranged under a funding pass-through with the state Department of Human Services, which operates the assistance program statewide.
