NewsOK.com | Literacy council gets $10,000 grant: "The Oklahoma City Literacy Council was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the state Libraries Department's Literacy Resource Office.
Council Executive Director Millonn Lamb said the money will be used to enhance literacy services to the community.
The grant program is made possible by an annual appropriation from the Oklahoma Legislature to the state Libraries Department, she said.
Lamb said the council will buy materials and services used for adult literacy students and their tutors.
The council is a volunteer-based literacy program that offers free instruction in basic reading, writing and math to people age 16 and older.
A report issued from the National Institute for Literacy estimates that nearly one in five Oklahomans lack the most basic reading, writing, and computational skills necessary for functioning in everyday life.
According to the report, approximately 137,000 people in Oklahoma City function at the lowest level of literacy.
