CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Theme: Matters of Access in Higher Education

American Academic, the annual higher education policy journal of the American Federation of Teachers, announces a call for proposals to be included in its Summer 2006 issue. The 2006 theme is 'Matters of Access in Higher Education'-- a foundation of public policy at the federal and state levels of government. We will also be considering articles not related to access, yet still of interest to the higher education community.

Today, however, ensuring access has become paramount for higher education as government cutbacks and increased enrollment have resulted in students and families paying more of the bill while key programs are being curtailed. The hiring of full-time tenured faculty is being cut back and colleges are turning to commercial sources of income. The goal of access to a high quality education seems to be in trouble.

The 2006 issue of American Academic will look at articles including, but not limited to:

* To what extent has higher education proven to be the great leveler—a source for opportunity for people, regardless of ethnic or family background or ability to pay?
* To what extent do higher education policies contribute to existing inequities?
* What is the impact on access of rising college costs and loan burden, declining federal aid and academic staffing patterns?
* What is the appropriate level of government involvement in quality and consumer protection?
* What role does distance education play in terms of access and quality?

Deadline for all Proposals: December 8, 2005

Proposal should include a cover page with: title of the proposed paper, author and affiliation, and telephone/e-mail contact information.

Proposals should be no longer than three double-spaced pages plus references. Please submit proposals to AFT Higher Education at americanacademic@aft.org. For more information, contact the AFT Higher Education staff at 202/879-4426 or 800/238-1133 x4426.
