...I have talked to several librarians and teachers recently about these issues, and there are a number of them who feel voiceless about the intellectual direction of Oklahoma under the recent conservative movement. Some have moved to less radical states. More will certainly follow. Those who stay watch what they say, what they teach.
They are discouraged by the recent decision by the Oklahoma County Metro Library Commission to create a special parenting section for what the right-wingers view as controversial children books with homosexual themes. (One of the books is King & King, which is age-appropriate and contains no sexuality.) They are discouraged by the constant challenges they receive in class about the theory of evolution, which remains the bedrock of modern scientific thought.

I believe Oklahoma librarians, teaches, and professors need to organize over these intellectual issues in the coming weeks and certainly before the state legislature meets again...
Perhaps Okie Funk should meet OLA's Legislative Committee, Social Responsibilities Roundtable, Intellectual Freedom Committee and visit the OLA on the Issues section to find out where many Oklahoma Librarians do stand. Oklahoma Librarians have been anything but shush on such issues.
