NewsOK.com | Library sets Kwanzaa festivities

NewsOK.com | Library sets Kwanzaa festivities: "Ralph Ellison Library will host a free Kwanzaa celebration from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 2000 NE 23.

Melanie Bratcher, a professor of African and black studies at the University of Oklahoma, will present a program celebrating African dance, spiritual music, crafts, storytelling and poetry.

Celebratory food will be provided.

Created in 1966 in the hopes of unifying people of African descent during a time of cultural unrest in the United States, Kwanzaa is a Swahili word meaning 'fruits of the harvest.'

The holiday was created by Maulana Karenga, a University of California professor of black studies, who hoped Kwanzaa could become a cohesive holiday that gave people a way to honor African history.

For more information, call the library at 424-143"
