The Norman Transcript--Library dean position endowed

The Norman Transcript--Library dean position endowed: "Dean Sul H. Lee will be first holder of the chair

For The Transcript

A new faculty endowment by Tulsa residents Walter and Peggy Helmerich will endow in perpetuity the position of the University of Oklahoma's dean of university libraries.

The Helmerichs have been longtime supporters of OU and its libraries. Their previous $1 million gift to the library endowment was honored through the naming of the Peggy V. Helmerich Great Reading Room in Bizzell Memorial Library.

This gift to create the Peggy V. Helmerich Chair continues that commitment and honors the 27 years of leadership provided by Dean Sul H. Lee, who will be the first holder of the chair.?

The senior dean on the Norman campus, Lee has led the university libraries since 1978. His accomplishments include overseeing the addition of the Bizzell Memorial Library's Doris W. Neustadt Wing and bringing OU's libraries into the electronic era. During his tenure, the library collections have grown to more than 4.8 million volumes. A national leader in the area of libraries, Dean Lee is the editor of more than 30 books about library and information studies."
