Position: Head of Serials Services Librarian Available: May 1, 2007

Position Summary:

The Head of Serials Services acquires, organizes and maintains the serial collection; supervises and trains departmental personnel. Responsible for developing a serial collection that meets the needs of faculty, staff and students. This position is responsible for overall supervision of the efficient operation of the Serials Services department; provides access and retrieval of information as it applies to the department and to reference services concerning serials.

Supervision:

The Head of Serials Services reports to and is supervised by the Director of the Library. The Head of this department supervises three FTE staff and one .38 FTE student position.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for the supervision and direction of Serials staff which includes planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating all operations.

Planning, directing, coordinating, and maintaining the serials collection which includes print and electronic resources. This includes preparing volumes for binding, cataloging and analyzing of serials, being aware of new titles, title changes and other pertinent serial information. Over seeing the staff in accomplishing these tasks.

Work with the Director, Library Advisory Committee, and faculty on the acquisition of currently received serial titles and recommends cancellations and new subscriptions to be added to the Library collection. Coordinates ordering procedures, payment of invoices with Administration and maintains receipt files on an online system. Maintains a budget for serials recording funds spent and projected expenditures for the department. Current budget for serials is $1,200,000.

Maintain financial records of all serials and good working relationship with vendors.
Knowledge of publishers and publishing standards. Works with publishers to improve information flow to faculty and students and works with faculty to understand the current publishing matrix.

*Maintain appropriate statistics.
*Respond to patron and staff questions in regard to serials.
*Participate in receiving and cataloging donations to the Library.
*Responsible for the maintenance of the serial collection (mending or repair).
*Maintain information in the following union lists: Oklahoma Union List of Serials, SERHOLD, and OCLC.
*Work with other Service Heads to provide copyright information to faculty and students.
*Lecture to classes and groups on serials.
*Participate in professional organizations and preforms research to meet requirements for faculty appointment in the Graduate College.
*Participate in providing outreach activities to the healthcare professionals in the State.

Qualifications:

Required

# Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school
# Two or more years experience with serials (print and electronic)
# Experience with online cataloging and acquisitions systems
# Excellent management and leadership skills
# Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Library and Campus:

The library is housed in a building at the heart of campus. Staff includes 8.5 professional librarians, 21 paraprofessionals, and 20 student assistants. The library serves the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Allied Health, Public Health and the Graduate College, and is a resource library for all health professionals in the State.

Salary and Benefits:

Non-tenure track faculty rank at the Assistant Professor level in the Graduate College, Department of Health Sciences Library and Information Management. Minimum salary of $45,000 – 52,000, plus medical, dental, life insurance, TIAA/CREF and other retirement options, and 33 days leave per year.
