Hello from T-town!

After much drama trying to get internet access I have finally made it. I owe a huge thank you to my brilliant husband who has connections and got me "hooked up". Only thing I will say about the drama is that the OLA Conference Hotel does not have broadband internet access available to their guests (?!?!).

Now to today's events.
I attended the DDC22 workshop today and learned a lot. Dr. Joanna Fountain was very knowledgable and here are some words of her wisdom I want to share.
1) DDC22 has tried to move to more modern terms (i.e. Children of unmarried parents instead of Children of unwed parents)
2) Read the DDC22 Manual Introduction and Glossary (it will help!)
3) Be sure to look at the lists of discontinued numbers in DDC22 and do not place anything in those categories--they are empty for a reason
4) In most libraries there is no reason to go beyond the 4 digit after the decimal (i.e. 940.5318[STOP!])

* I do have one question however and it's much more philosophical. It was brought up that the concept of "racism" is being zoned out of the DDC and that classification of hate/discrimination is to be geared specifically towards the race that is talked about most in the material. In a way I think this treatmet of racism could be seen as too simplistic--like racism is always ever directed at one race, when infact the reality is racism is multidimensional and multicultural... Please remember I am relatively new to cataloging--but this is how it struck me. What are your thoughts?

On a different note the catered lunch was good! Salad with grilled chicken (yummmmmmm) :-)
More updates tomorrow! Take care!
