The Enid News & Eagle | Lawmakers don't want happy ever after for gay prince

The Enid News & Eagle
At least two local lawmakers have signed a petition asking libraries to remove a children’s fairy tale that tells the story of a gay prince.

State Rep. Curt Roggow, R-Enid, and Mike Jackson, R-Enid, have joined more than 70 legislators in signing a petition authored by Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, Kern said. Kern and other state legislators met with the Metropolitan Library Commission Thursday to present the petition and ask the book “King & King” be removed from the children’s section and placed in the adult section of libraries.

Roggow, who did not attend the meeting, said he would like the book banned altogether. “... the book was not written for adults. It was written for children,” he said. “I’d like to see the children’s book removed from a public library ... that receives state funds.”

Kern said she received a complaint from a family in her district whose child had checked out the book from the Warr Acres Library. Kern said she was meeting with the commission “to ask that books with sexual themes and content be placed only in the adult section of the library.”

One more thing-- Doing a quick search on OCLC I found only 4 libraries in the state have King & King. To protect the staff of those libraries from needless news media I won't post their names--just know two are public libraries and the other two are academic libraries. (There are 369 libraries total in OCLC that have the book)
