: "Like any phenomenon, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has both fans and detractors.

A few literary critics have denounced Rowling's prose as substandard and her good-and-evil outlook as simplistic, deriding the stories as 'comfort' books.

Laura Pryce, the Children and Youth Services librarian at the Bartlesville Public Library, loves the Harry Potter books but sees other series of equal or better quality which don't get as much attention.

'I do like them, and I think they do appeal to all ages,' Pryce says. 'I do wonder sometimes, why Harry Potter? I mean, it's great that it's become so popular and gotten lots of kids to read, but there are lots of other books and good series out there that are just as good, but maybe haven't gotten the attention that [Rowling's books] receive.' " ...
