As a computer nerd and a cataloger I find this fascinating. I never thought the rest of pc-nerddom would think to hack a library catalog.
Chicago Tribune | Hacker disabled libraries' server: "A hacker with a taste for the Beatles played havoc recently with a computer that serves 21 suburban library districts, forcing a quick refresher in the Dewey Decimal System and triggering problems that still haven't been fixed.
The trouble began this month when technicians at Cooperative Computer Services in Arlington Heights noticed that someone had breached the server used to catalog and check out material at libraries in the north and northwest suburbs.
Rogue video and audio files--including some Beatles songs--discovered on the system indicated the trespasser probably was trying to use the computer as a host for an illegal file-sharing service, said Cooperative Computer Services administrator Richard Shurman.
But when technicians began to take action, the invader bid the server a vengeful farewell.
'They issued a command that took us down,' Shurman said. 'That was probably their parting shot.'"
