The Enid News & Eagle Enid council nets $10,000 literacy grant: "Enid Literacy Council recently was awarded a $10,000 community literacy grant to enhance local literacy services in the community from Literacy Resource Office of Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
This grant program is made possible by an annual appropriation to Department of Libraries from the state Legislature.
Grant funds will be used to purchase materials and services for adult literacy students and their teachers. Enid Literacy Council is a volunteer-based literacy program that offers free instruction in basic reading, writing and computational skills.
According to a literacy report, 16 percent of adults in Garfield County and 17 percent of adults in the city of Enid function at the lowest level of literacy.
“These funds will allow the Enid Literacy Council to expand its resources to better meet the needs of the community while maintaining current literacy services and programs,” said Mona Loewen, board president."
