The Enid News and Eagle--Allen, Cooper honored

The Enid News and Eagle--Allen, Cooper honored: "A former mayor and a long-time educator are the latest two people to be named to the Enid Walk of Fame.

The announcement came Thursday morning during the annual Mayor's Breakfast at the Cherokee Strip Conference Center.

Former Mayor Mike Cooper and the late Dorice Allen were honored.

Allen was a longtime Enid resident who began her educational career as third-grade teacher at Carver Elementary School. She was the first black educator in Enid Public Schools system and also served as librarian/media specialist at Emerson Junior High School, retiring in 1966. She died in July.

Allen's award was accepted by her husband, Willie, who said his family would always cherish the honor.

Her daughter, Pamela, said her mother lived a life of service and never sought awards.

'It's fitting she should be honored,' she said."
