Found this via boingboing.
Yet another idea to for withdrawn library books this time from Ex Libris Anonymous.
Take the snazzy covers of withdrawn books, place some notebook paper in the middle, spiral bind it and viola you have a fabulous journal!
Seriously if a library friends group combined this idea with the purse idea with the remnants of a book sale I bet they could accomplish some good fund raising.

I own one of these with sketchbook pages. The cover is from a reader called Driving the Reading Road. It's one of my favorite things.
