Mounds library receives parenting DVDs

Mounds library receives parenting DVDs: – A resource for raising healthy and well-adjusted children is now available at the Mounds Public Library.

The “I Am Your Child” DVD series was created by the Parents Action for Children Foundation. The DVDs feature well-known celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gloria Estafan, Sylvester Stallone and Maria Shriver.

Funded through a federal Child Abuse Prevention grant, the Oklahoma State Department of Health distributed the series to Oklahoma libraries last month.

The series includes such topics as “Preparing for Parenthood,” “Quality Child Care: Making the Right Choice For You and Your Child,” “Safe from the Start,” “The First Years Last Forever,” “To Be A Father,” “A Child With Special Needs,” and “Discipline: Teaching Limits With Love.”

Experts say many factors are involved in rearing safe, healthy kids including a loving home environment and a rewarding educational experience.

The video stresses the importance of establishing reading routines, activities to spark a child’s interest in reading, and incorporating literacy into everyday activities.

“Literacy is a fundamental component to raising healthy, happy, productive children. Parents, grandparents and other caregivers are encouraged to spend quality time reading to children,” said Sherie Trice, of the OSDH Family Support and Prevention Office.
