Stranded by flight delays this week, the Virginia resident rented a vehicle in Dallas and braved Oklahoma's icy roads to accept the award at a black-tie dinner Friday night.
'I don't consider what happened to me in the last few days an adventure,' said Helprin, who wore snow boots on Saturday at a book signing and talk at Tulsa Central Library.
Compared to his other journeys -- breaking the sound barrier in an Israeli jet and writing everything from speeches for Bob Dole to expansive novels -- the drive up the highways to Tulsa probably wasn't that exciting.
But his fans were excited to see him..."
