Tahlequah Daily Press: "Actions of some Hulbert residents in regard to the Hulbert Community Library have drawn the ire of the town's board of trustees.
Board member Ed Beckham stated his displeasure with the group at the board's regular monthly meeting Thursday night at the Town Hall Building.
'The contract the city has with the library is not being followed,' said Beckham. 'There are calls for a library board with three members appointed by the city and answerable to the city.'
The problems arose when Mamie Hall, a member of the Hulbert Friends of the Library, brought a letter to Hulbert librarian Melinda Webb and ordered her to mail it to a list of businesses in town. The letter, which Hall also forced Webb to sign, asked for donations to the Friends of the Library for a summer reading program.
The reading program is sponsored by the library through Eastern Oklahoma District Library Systems, not through the Friends. The actions of the Friends have also angered Georgie Drees, branch manager for both Hulbert and Tahlequah libraries.
'The Friends of the Library are not the library,' said Drees. 'The Friends should not dominate and tell the library what to do. I'm not going to have the Friends of the Library intimidate any of the staff over here.'"
