Odds and Ends

Went and watched Coraline today with the spouse and 3 yr old. We all really enjoyed it. We haven't read the book yet - but the movie has piqued my interest so I think I may download the audio version of it from our OverDrive collection at work.

Initially I was not to sure about taking our daughter because I heard that it might be too scary. But I found a great site which helped us decide - Kids-In-Mind: Movie Ratings That Actually Work spelled out all the Sex, Violence and Language in the film and gave play-by-play spoilers so we would know if it would be too much. We also looked up other movies that she currently enjoys for comparison to see exactly how the rating system worked with what she already enjoys watching.

I liked this site because it does not throw in a bunch of self-righteous indignation regarding the films - instead it lists "just the facts" and lets us decide. A great tool for parents and reference desk librarians alike. (although as of the writing of this the site seems to be down...)

Let's see what else - oh as many of you know I've been working with Openbiblio as a catalog for my other job. Well, it's been great - but I just don't have the time to develop it like I would like to or to learn all I need to learn. So I'm starting the slow process of migrating everything to LibraryThing - and to use that as our online public catalog.

So far it's a slow painful process. I have MARC records from our other system - many of them are skeletal. So I can't just important in ISBN for all 4,890 titles (many are too old to have ISBN and others that info was never entered into the catalog prior to my working there). So I started emailing tech support at LibraryThing a week and half ago. One person said they could upload my MARC records for me - but I've not heard anything from her since I emailed her the file. When you pay a couple thousand dollars for a database it's easy to call a vendor and demand service -- but in this case - since this was a non-profit pricing of less than $20...I really don't feel like I can just call and demand service. So I'm impatiently waiting for something to happen or someone to contact me so I can get all my titles added and can start the tagging process... The cool thing is once I get this up - I think we'll have one of the largest Jewish material collections on LibraryThing.

I really think it will be great once it's all working...but so far the tech support aspects of Librarything have been frustrating.

Oh - I also got an email this week from Tim @ TCCL who had this to say:
I thought I'd write to tell you that based on the original program by The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenberg County, the Tulsa City-County Library System is embarking on our own "23 Things" program at http://tccllearning.blogspot.com. Sponsored by the New Technology Committee, this self-paced continuing education class will be performed over the course of 13 weeks, beginning February 2. Participating TCCL staff will work hands-on to learn about Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds, online photo & video sharing, social bookmarking, & LibraryThing just to name a few. All staff will create their own blogs, be encouraged to comment on each others blogs, and perform such tasks as embedding a video, subscribing to RSS feeds, & editing a wiki.

On top of our current email, IM & text message reference services, we're hoping that TCCL becomes a hot bed of tech-savvy librarians. Check us out!

I'll be curious to see how that goes and if there's any pre and post testing they are doing to see if it actually helped the librarians become more tech savvy.

And the literate towns in Oklahoma are...

All the cool internet kids on places Fark, Digg, and Lisnews are talking about the latest America's Most Literate Cities Rankings. For those not familiar with how this is determined:
This study attempts to capture one critical index of our nation’s social health—the literacy of its major cities (population of 250,000 and above). This study focuses on six key indicators of literacy: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources.

This set of factors measures people's use of their literacy and thus presents a complex and nuanced portrait of our nation’s cultural vitality. From this data we can better perceive the extent and quality of the long-term literacy essential to individual economic success, civic participation, and the quality of life in a community and a nation....

And where do Oklahoma's cities rank? /insert drumroll

Tulsa, OK
2007 Rank: 16
2006 Rank: 19.5
2005 Rank: 24.5

Oklahoma City, OK
2007 Rank: 38.5
2006 Rank: 43
2005 Rank: 38

Very interesting....

A reader remembers Tulsa and Madeline

Stumbled upon this blog memory - that features one of the Tulsa libraries, Madeline L’Engle, and a fan. For those who do not know who L'Engle was try her site.

"When I was about 10 or 11 years old, I read everything I could get my hands on. The librarians in my small town library probably sniggered behind my back whenever I would check out 6 or 7 books at a time. But I really did read them all. And one day, I came upon A Wrinkle in Time, and at once I was able to identify with the awkward and endearing heroine, Meg. My imagination was captured ...

By the time I was about 12 years old, I had read all of the library system’s books by L’Engle. I say library system, because most of them had to be specially ordered by my tiny small town library to be shipped in from other branches. Then around that time, I heard that L’Engle was going to come and speak to the Tulsa library, and that every branch of the library got to select one person to be their representative to attend the event. The librarians at my library called me, because they knew how crazy I was about reading all of her books. So, the night of the event, I got to sit in front of the podium during her speech, and afterward we each walked up to present her with a rose. I was elated...."

An example of being able to help a patron have a wonderful lasting memory.

Tulsa librarian is toastmaster

Great Manhattan Mystery Conclave has asked Okie Will Thomas to be toast master for their September 28-30 event in Manhattan Kansas.

Will has written four historical adventures starring the mysterious London inquiry agent Cyrus Barker and his young apprentice, Thomas Llewelyn. The first book in the series is Some Danger Involved, an apt title indeed! His latest is The Hellfire Conspiracy. Will uses real historical personalities in his fast-moving novels, which are not only tremendous fun, but historically accurate.

Since Will is a librarian in the Tulsa, Oklahoma Library system, we’ve asked him to talk about how he made the difficult journey from cataloging books to writing them.

They say even if you aren't a writer you are welcome to attend because they love readers too.

Love for libraries from Tulsa

Love the Library
I love to read. However, being poor tends to limit my ability to buy the books that I love so much. There are the occasional yard sale, flea market, or thrift store finds. Unfortunately, you rarely find new books at any of those places.

That’s one of the nicest things about living inTulsa:Libraries. Libraries everywhere, whether rich or poor, new or old, the type of neighborhood doesn’t matter, there is a library in your area. I love that. A genuine love of reading was the best gift my family ever gave me, and I fully intend to pass that love on to my own children.

The Tulsa City-County Library system is an invaluable resource for parents. With school out for summer and children at home and underfoot 24/7, even the most patient and loving parents can reach the “I HAVE HAD ENOUGH” stage in no time. The library provides us with plenty of activities to enjoy with the kids over the summer break....

    Tulsa Librarian/Reviewer gets blogged

For a few months now, I've been reviewing fantasy and horror novels for Library Journal. Some titles include World War Z, The Terror, Un Lun Dun and The Good Fairies of New York.

I just received word that one of my more recent reviews, of Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box, was quoted in LJ's staff blog, "In the Bookroom".

For those who don't know, Joe Hill is a pen name for Joseph Hillstrom King, son of Stephen. His first published work, the story collection 20th Century Ghosts, won the Bram Stoker Award for Fiction Collection. His novella "Best New Horror" also won in the Long Fiction category, beating out his father's "The Things They Left Behind".

    TCCL librarian reviews

I don't know which is a neater library story...that Karl, from TCCL, has a book review published (thus representing Okie librarians proudly) OR that Stephen King's kid is publishing freaky books. You decide...

...Aging death-metal guitarist Judas Coyne, who's obsessed with the macabre, is living peacefully in upstate New York when he buys a dead man's haunted suit from an online auction site. (It arrives in a heart-shaped box.) Soon he and young Goth girlfriend Georgia are pulled into battle with the ghostly old man and their own shattered pasts... -Karl G. Siewert, Tulsa City-Cty. Lib.
